The Smallest Hard Drives with Space
66
Is bigger always better? When it comes to physically size, this is definitely not the case with the Computing World. This is especially true when it comes to hard drives. Hard drives get smaller and smaller and even one day we might be able to wear them as earrings or who knows maybe they will even not be visible. Some people even maintain we will be wearing these drives under our skin before we can even imagine. The next three drives are examples of Toshiba’s efforts to create the smallest hard drives.
The 1.8 Inch Hard Drive
Typically in Laptops, the drive inside is 2.5 inches in diameter. This is about to change with the release of 1.8 inch hard drives. Though already released, they are only now becoming more and more affordable for use in average consumer electronics.
The main brand pursuing this type of drive seems to be Toshiba. Currently they offer such a drive with 160 gigabytes of space. Expect that number to increase quickly over time.
The 1 Inch Hard Drive
The 1 Inch hard drive is yet another feat by Toshiba. They set the World Record by creating this extremely small drive that can hold up to 4 gigabytes of space. Though Toshiba wasn’t able to hold this record long as they were already working on a drive that was even smaller.
The .85 Inch Drive
This drive is even smaller than the one mentioned before and it even holds more space. It holds 8 gigabytes and fits in the palm of your hand (see the picture below). Future plans for a drive this size include mp3 players and possibly cell phones. This has a great impact on the laptop market. These small drives let laptop manufacture laptops that are so small they can’t manage to fit any cd drives on them anymore.
